Oedipus: Tragedy and Comedy

I felt that the story about Oedipus was really sad. However, I do feel that by going to Thebes he inevitable walked into his destiny. It makes me believe, when I hear stories like this one, that no matter what path we take in life, or which situations or circumstances we deal along our path, that it really doesn't matter because out lives our already mapped out for us. I'm not sure that I necessarily agree with this though. I do like to believe that everyone does have some type of control over our lives. But then again there is only so much that we can control. And whose to say by not taking control of our own lives, we aren't fulfilling our true purpose in life? The whole concept of fate is very confusing to me. But I do find it quite interesting.

  1. I am also confused with Jaquelyn, some people think that life is planned out and that we are only going through the motions of life, while other people think that life is based off of fate and destiny, and that life is just adventure that we ourselves plan out day by day. I agree with both sides I think that life is a measure of both its adventure that is already planned we just don’t know it yet.

  2. I see where Jackie is coming from with the whole mapping life out thing, but to me i'm not sure if life is mapped out for everyone... I think that everything happens for a reason, but at the same time I think that everyone has the power to make their life the way they want it. Say that when I got older I wanted to be a doctor. I could be a doctor if I really wanted it, I would just have to work really hard and set my mind to that goal. I guess we can map our on lives out.

  3. It is true that the concept of fate is rather confusing, and I agree with what you're saying about how having some control in our lives is also a way of pursuing our purpose. This kind of reminds me of the saying, "everything happens for a reason." Sometimes it's hard to tell whether that reason is because it's our destiny, or if it's because we chose to let it happen ourselves.
